Upcycled Red Brick Patio
At Strautman Gardening Pros, we’re passionate about projects that merge creativity with sustainability. Recently, we embarked on a journey to enhance our own property by building a patio on the side of our art studio using upcycled red bricks. This project not only reflects our eco-friendly values but also brings a timeless, rustic charm to our space that aligns with our artistic vision.
The Vision Behind the Project
Our art studio serves as a creative sanctuary, and we wanted an outdoor area that would complement this atmosphere—a spot where we could step outside, recharge, and find inspiration. Upcycled red bricks were the perfect choice for this project, adding a sense of history and character that new materials simply can’t match. We envisioned a cozy, inviting patio that feels like an extension of the studio, seamlessly blending into the surrounding landscape.
Sourcing the Upcycled Bricks
We began by sourcing bricks from a local salvage yard that specializes in repurposing materials from old construction sites. This not only gave us access to bricks with unique variations in color and texture but also supported our commitment to reducing waste and reusing resources.
Building the Foundation
A sturdy foundation is essential for any patio, and for this project, we followed our preferred method of using gravel layers instead of sand. Here’s how we did it:
Excavation and Base Preparation: We started by excavating the area to the appropriate depth. Next, we laid down a base of 3/4 inch gravel, which provides excellent drainage and prevents the bricks from shifting over time, especially in Sonoma County’s varied weather conditions.
Chipped Gravel Layer: On top of the larger gravel, we added a 1/4 inch layer of chipped gravel. This layer serves as a stable bedding for the bricks, locking them in place and offering a firm, level surface that enhances the overall durability of the patio.
Brick Layout: For the layout, we opted for a classic herringbone pattern. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also increases the strength and stability of the surface. We carefully placed each brick, embracing their natural imperfections to create a look that feels authentic and connected to the history of the materials.
Steel Edging: To keep the patio neat and defined, we installed steel edging around the perimeter. This is a technique we frequently use, as it helps maintain the integrity of the patio's shape and provides a clean, finished look.
Final Touches: After setting the bricks, we tamped them down to ensure they were firmly in place. The chipped gravel layer between the bricks creates a seamless, stable surface that’s both functional and visually appealing.
The Finished Patio
The end result is a stunning patio that perfectly complements our art studio. The rich, warm hues of the red bricks add a welcoming feel to the space, while their weathered appearance gives the patio a sense of age and authenticity. It’s a versatile area that serves as a peaceful retreat, a space for outdoor gatherings, or a quiet spot to draw inspiration from the surroundings.
To enhance the ambiance, we’ve added native plants around the patio's edges, integrating our love for local flora into the design. We also included seating made from felled logs, highlighting our commitment to using natural and sustainable materials throughout the landscape. String lights overhead complete the setup, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere for evening relaxation or artistic exploration.
