Timeless Hardscape projects in Sonoma County

Hardscaping is what gives structure to your outdoor space.

It’s the foundation everything else builds off of. Patios, retaining walls, and pathways define how your yard looks, feels, and functions on a daily basis. In Sonoma County, where outdoor spaces are used year round, hardscaping is what makes a space usable, not just visually appealing.

Sustainable Masonry with an Open-Graded Permeable Base

Sustainable Masonry with an Open-Graded Permeable Base

A lot of what makes hardscaping last isn’t visible once the project is finished.

One of the most important parts is the base layer underneath the surface. This is what supports the patio, pathway, or paver system over time.

In most cases, we use an open graded base rather than a compacted solid base.

This type of base is designed to allow water to move through it instead of trapping moisture underneath the surface. That helps prevent shifting, settling, and long term drainage issues.

It also works especially well in Sonoma County, where soil conditions and seasonal moisture can cause movement if water has nowhere to go.

In practical terms, it helps:

• Improve drainage beneath patios and walkways
• Reduce long term settling and movement
• Extend the lifespan of the hardscape
• Keep the surface more stable over time

Most of this work is never seen once the project is complete, but it’s one of the main reasons some hardscapes hold up for years while others start to fail. read here to learn more about permeable base → Patios with Open-Graded Base for Superior Drainage.

Brick Pathway

A well-built flagstone surface should:

• Sit on a properly prepared base so it stays stable over time
• Be set with consistent spacing and support underneath each piece
• Allow for drainage so water doesn’t get trapped beneath the surface
• Be laid out in a way that feels natural but still intentional

When done right, flagstone tends to hold up well and develop more character over time rather than looking worn out.

It’s a good option for homeowners who want something that feels less structured than pavers, but still durable enough for everyday use.

Flagstone and natural stone work

Flagstone is one of the most versatile materials for outdoor spaces, especially when you want a more natural look that fits the surrounding environment.

It’s commonly used for patios, pathways, and transitions between areas, and works well in Sonoma County where a softer, more organic style tends to age better over time.

Unlike uniform pavers, flagstone is irregular in shape, which allows for more flexibility in layout. It can be installed with tighter joints for a cleaner look, or spaced out with gravel or ground cover for a more relaxed feel.

From a practical standpoint, the installation approach matters just as much as the material itself.

Decomposed Granite Pathways

For a rustic and cost-effective solution, decomposed granite (DG) is an excellent choice. DG pathways and patios are ideal for creating a natural, earthy look that blends beautifully with native planting and drought-tolerant landscaping. With a permeable base, our DG installations are durable and water-efficient, making them a great fit for Sonoma County gardens.

Brick and Paver Installation

Brick and pavers are timeless materials for hardscape designs, offering durability and classic appeal. Our permeable brick and paver installations are perfect for driveways, patios, and walkways, combining the charm of traditional materials with modern sustainability. By using a permeable base, we ensure proper drainage, helping to prevent water damage and maintain the integrity of your hardscape for years to come.

Block Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are essential for both function and design, helping to prevent soil erosion and define your landscape. Our block retaining walls are built with precision and care, providing structural support while enhancing the overall look of your outdoor space. Whether you need a small garden wall or a large structural retaining wall, we tailor each project to meet your unique needs.
